Why choose an apprenticeship over university?

Are you navigating your next steps after finishing school or college? In today’s fast-paced and ever-evolving job market, the traditional route of attending university is no longer the only pathway. Increasingly, apprenticeships are emerging as a compelling alternative with over 200,000 starting an apprenticeship between August and January 2022/23

Let’s compare each pathway to help you determine which option suits you best…

The cost

University – University education often comes with a hefty price tag. From tuition fees to accommodation costs, the financial burden can accumulate quickly, leading to significant student debt.

Apprenticeships – Not only do you earn a salary while you learn, but the training expenses are also covered, enabling you to acquire skills without accumulating significant debt. Additionally, the salary you earn helps you become more financially independent.

Take a look at the example graph below that demonstrates the difference in salary trajectory between a university student and a business administration apprentice…

Practical experience

University – University education offers a wealth of theoretical knowledge and a broad understanding of your chosen field. However, it often lacks practical, hands-on experience. While some courses include placements, these opportunities can be limited and may not fully prepare you for the day-to-day demands of a professional environment.

Apprenticeships – Apprenticeships combine learning and working, providing practical experience directly in the workplace. From day one, you immerse yourself in a professional environment, acquiring skills that you can immediately apply. This hands-on approach ensures you understand both the theory and practical execution of tasks. With mentorship from experienced industry professionals, you gain instant valuable feedback that you can apply directly to your role.  This practical experience makes individuals that complete an apprenticeship highly desirable to employers, as they have already demonstrated their ability to perform in their chosen field.

Entry into the workforce

University – University graduates often enter the workforce with strong theoretical knowledge and critical thinking skills, but may lack practical experience. While internships can help, they often don’t fully prepare students fully for their immediate job demands, meaning they may require additional on-the-job training.

Apprenticeships – Apprenticeships provide a direct entry into the workforce. Apprentices gain hands-on experience from day one, working alongside industry professionals and developing job-ready skills. This can often lead to apprentices securing a full-time job post apprenticeship. Based on learner data from January 2024, 91% of our apprentices stayed in employment at either the same or new employer post apprenticeship completion.

Post sixth form, I decided that working whilst also leaning was the best journey for me and it has been the best and most rewarding decision I’ve made so far. My apprenticeship has allowed me to gain access to a career pathway and put me in a very strong position with a full-time job at just 17.
